Peruvian exports of organic products would close this year at $ 225 million, 13% more than last year, estimated the director of Commercial Intelligence and Planning Promperú, Bernardo Muñoz.
He recalled that in 2000 Peru exported organic products for just $ 25 million and last year topped $ 195 million, demonstrating the growth of this sector.
He said that these products represent an interesting niche market that continues to grow despite the global financial crisis.
The main organic products to be exported by Peru are coffee, organic bananas and cocoa, followed far behind by the cotton and mango.
"Those are the big players of organic products that are directed mainly to the European Union, the United States and in smaller quantities to Asia," he said.
He explained that in Peru the organic crops that have the major hectares are coffee with 72.000 hectares, 14.000 hectares cocoa and bananas to 5.000 hectares.
"These products are targeted at various consumer segments, one composed of people of all ages who are very conscious of their diet and health conscious, and another for older people," he said.
Recommended to promote the export of organic products, exotic, such as organic peppers, which were exported in 2007 by 98 thousand dollars last year for $ 308 000.
Another major product is the sesame which are mainly exported to America, he said.
He also mentioned the case of the onion that is developing an interesting niche market and whose shipments to international markets dropped from 93 thousand to 154 thousand U.S. dollars.

Reported that other ginger products are exported to the United States and has already started selling to the Netherlands, the jojoba is sent to Germany, USA, Netherlands and United Kingdom, and organic lucuma main market is the United States recently France, Holland and Australia, among others.
Muñoz, who will present the topic "Organic Peru: Business Opportunities and Intelligence" in the "Second National Convention on Organic Production" organized by Adex, SENASA, INIA and FINCYT as part of the Expoalimentaria, remarked that these crops developed favorably in the recent years.
